Originally hailing from Eastern Congo the musicians embarked on a winding odyssey from their home Lubumbashi via Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania to finally arrive in Kenya's capitol Nairobi, where they would become the rave of town, at times the most loved and now longest running dance band: Les Mangelepa have released more than 13 albums and penned some of East Africa's most popular songs. Giants of their time, they kept fans busy producing hit after hit - their brilliant arrangements and superbly crafted tunes kept legions all over Africa shaking their hips to this unmistakable beat.
With their swirling guitars, heavy brass and sweet harmony vocals, Les Mangelepa were at the centre of the classic and subtle East African rumba sound. They are a remarkable survival story: After nearly 40 years they still perform every week at Club Vibro in Nairobi West, bucking the trend for DJs and small ensembles with up to 10 or even 12 musicians on stage. The riot continues, East African music is suddenly back in fashion and Les Mangelepa are hot property.
